Geothermal heatpump systems are only slightly more efficient, but offer a vastly reduced return on investment compared to our Air-Sourced hydrocarbon heatpumps. Combine air-sourced hydrocarbon heatpump with solar electricity for the ultimate in hydronic heating efficiency.
We also introduced inverter-style heatpumps but were disappointed with the results, they were not as efficient as our ZA hydrocarbon heatpumps, so we have discontinued development.
Hydronic Heating systems - Never be cold again
If you've ever experienced the luxury of a heated floor, or stepping from the shower into a warm towel, on a cold winters day, you'll know why Hydronic Heating systems are becoming very popular.
There are no drafts from forced air movement, you are just gently bathed in a warm environment. It's safe for all the family and great for people with allergies.
Water can be heated by GAS, LPG, Wood,
(Geothermal) Heat Pump, Water-Sourced, Air Sourced
Heat Pump, or even a combination of one or more of these.
For Australian conditions outside of natural GAS area's,
we generally recommend Air Sourced Heat Pumps as they
provide the greatest overall control, sustainability
and cost efficiency compared to straight LPG, Wood,
and electric systems.
We use the trusted name in
non GAS hydronics throughout Australia, and despite
what you may have heard can efficiently heat
water hot enough for hydronic heating *radiators and
towel rails! (Increase the radiator size to compensate for lower water temp)
Heat-pump running cost less than GAS and far less than Electric or LPG
Electricity AND GAS prices are constantly rising, and solar electricity costs continue to fall, so although installing an air-sourced electric heat-pump will cost more initially, there will be significant cost savings over time.
There are lots of factors that affect
the COP of a heat-pump under the required conditions:
- The design and innovation of the heatpump - they vary greatly!
- The gas/refrigerant used
- The ambient air temperature
- The starting or returning water temperature
- The water flow rate
- Local voltage fluctuation
- The input kW will also vary with the other variables
There is no such thing as "over-unity", energy in must equal energy out. The MAGIC is where the energy-in comes from and how efficiently it can be harnessed.
The Coefficient of Performance (COP) is simply a way
of measuring the efficiency of something. It is the
ratio of energy in vs energy out. A COP
of 3 means 3x units of energy out for 1x unit in. In
our case with air-to-water heat-pumps, the difference
in the numbers is the energy harnessed from the air
- at COP=3, 3kW of heat energy out comes from 1kW of electricity in, and 2kW of "solar" (heat) energy in, from the air.

Sanden Heat-pump Hydronics ?
Were you sold a Sanden heat-pump system for hydronics?
We have been contacted numerous times by customers who were ill-advised and were sold hydronics systems running from multiple Sanden Heat-pumps. (not by us) Unfortunately, most of these systems were undersized, (THE SANDEN DOES NOT PUT OUT 4.5kW IN LOW AMBIENT TEMPERATURES) working the Sandens far beyond their design capabilities, systems never working properly, and leading to premature failure of the heat-pumps.
Sanden heat-pumps are great for potable hot water, and if they had been sized correctly may have coped as hydronic heat-pumps even though that was never their intended application.
If you are such a customer, we can help you try correct the situation, and replace the Sandens with an adequately sized Skyline Energy hydronic heatpump. You may be able to re-use the tank and one of the heat-pumps for dedicated potable hot water, and recoup some of the original cost of the other heat-pumps.

Changing from GAS/LPG to heatpump - for panel radiator systems ?
Heatpumps have lower water temperature than a gas boiler - but it still works!
The heat output of a panel radiator is based on the entering water temp, the room temperature, and the water flowrate or exiting water temperature.
Gas boilers can generally output water up to about 83C but to retain good efficiency we usually run our heatpumps to max of 55C. (the hotter we push the water the lower the efficiency)
Radiator manufacturers usually state the output of their radiators based on 80C entering temp, 60C exit temp, and 20C room temp.
At 55C/45C/20C for heatpump the panel radiator output would be roughly half.
Boilers modulate the gas flame, from max output to about 15% before turning off. They cycle on and off as required. When the house reaches the set temperature the system switches off until the temperature drops, then cycles back on usually at max flame before modulating.
What all this means is you can put a 30kW gas boiler on a 20kW heatload, it will quickly heat the water to its set temp (80C) then modulate, the water will be flowing through the rads at 80C and heat the house quickly up to temp, then cycle off.
(On most boilers you can program the water output temperature. If you can do this on yours, you could try turning it down to 55C and see how it performs)
Our heatpumps do not modulate but they do cycle on and off according to the house temp. If you change to a 55C heatpump it will take longer to heat the house because of the lower output of the panel radiators, but it will get there as long as the house does not lose heat faster than the panel radiators can heat it.
If the response from the heatpump is too slow, you could consider adding extra radiators where necessary.
Some heatpumps are advertised as hi-temperature heatpumps, but running them at 70C instead of 55C would drive down the efficiency to the extent that power usage would be far higher.

Simplified rules for sizing your heatpump for . . . . .
MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY AND SERVICE LIFE!
- Calculate how many kW are required
- Look at the climatology of the location to establish the duration of 0oC to +4oC. Donít just look at the extreme temps, look at the mean overnight temp and duration
- If the ambient air temp rarely dips below +4oC or does so for short periods then you can use this simple calculation...
3.3x electricity input kW = heatpump output (ZA hydrocarbon models) kW to size the heatpump.
- If the mean overnight ambient air temp is between 0oC and +4oC change the calculation to
2.5 x electricity input kW = heatpump output (ZA hydrocarbon models) kW to size the heatpump.
- A more powerful heatpump will raise the water temp more rapidly so it will cycle off before it needs to defrost,
thereby maintaining a higher COP and efficiency.
- If your building has very poor thermal efficiency (leaks heat energy) this will lead to longer running time increasing the likely need for defrosting which leads to higher running cost.
- Skyline Energy Hydrocarbon heatpumps do not modulate output like gas boilers, so it is also important not to oversize which will cause short-cycling. Generally it is not necessary to increase the water storage capacity beyond 100Lt to 400Lt. (greater water storage can work against you in the shoulder periods where heating may not be required for more than a few days, as you need to reheat ALL the water in order to be able to use it)

sounds too good to be true . . . maybe it is!
Sizing a heat-pump to do hydronic heating AND potable hot water means increasing the size of the heat-pump to cater for both applications without compromising either one, and increasing the complexity of the system. We think its false economy, and recommend seperate potable hot water unit using either a Solar-Boosted GAS, or high efficiency heat pump
elements totally destroy the efficiency of a heat pump. To
make-up for an undersized heat pump, AND to maintain
the potable hot water temperature, some combined units
can use up to 3x 3kW electric elements for heating!
Efficient back-up for solar and/or wood/pellet-fired hydronic system:

Instead of the traditional electric element backup,
why not use a heat-pump that will provide the same (or
more) energy but consume 60-70% less electricty!
How does this work
The solar and/or wood boiler system heats water in
a storage tank which supplies the hydronic panels or
floorcoils with hot water. When the sun/fire dies down
and the water starts to cool, and if the hydronics needs
more heat, the control system will fire-up the heat-pump
to replace the heat from the solar/fire. Once the water
in the tank reaches its optimum temperature, (with or
without a rekindled fire) the heat-pump is automaticay

boosting, (a small heat pump like the SX-10) or a heat
pump that gives you the flexibility to use either wood

The Siddons Solarstream 327-SS, 264-SS, and 417-SM heatpumps were amongst the most successful hot water units in Australia, and thousands have been sold.
Siddons Solarstream stopped manufacturing them about 4 years ago.
The "Everlast" 316 stainless steel tanks they used are almost indestructable but some of those heatpumps are getting a bit tired now, so Skyline Energy will soon be offering new, "improved" replacements for those old heatpumps.
